News
DLD's fall conference, Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice, is coming soon. The San Antonio conference is just around the proverbial corner: 1 and 2 November. There's still time to avoid having to register on site, though. Jump to the conference information page and learn how to spend a couple of days with other outstanding professionals in workshop sessions led by Rollanda O'Connor, Steve Graham, Margo Mastropieri, Karen Harris, Tom Scruggs, and many other eminent individuals in Learning Disabilities.

DLD is pleased with the initial reception for the new publication, "Thinking about Response to Intervention and Learning Disabilities: A Teacher's Guide." Members of DLD received their free copies in the last few weeks. The RTI booklet is now available to the public via the CEC Store. At a bargain cost of $4.95 each, you can get your own copy. And, if you're interested in distributing copies to others, you can get a discount on multiple copies. Check it out!

DLD's Past President, Karen Rooney, is soliciting nominations for vice president and secretary for DLD. The terms of the offices begin in July 2008. The secretary serves a two-year term, and the vice president serves over four years, moving from vice president to president-elect, president, and past president in successive years. All officers must be members in good standing of The Council for Exceptional Children at the time of their nomination and election and remain so throughout the duration of their term in office. However, nominees will have time to check or establish their membership status before the election. As a part of the duties, both the vice president and the secretary serve as voting members of DLD's executive board, so they must be available to attend board meetings (usually fall, winter, and spring). DLD's constitution and by-laws describe the duties of the offices. Please direct nominations to Karen J. Rooney at Edenterinc@aol.com (put "DLD nomination" in the subject line). She will contact nominees to ensure that only those who wish to run for an office will appear on the ballot.

Judy Engelhard, chair of DLD's Public Policy Committee (formerly "Children-Youth Action Network") continues to keep TeachingLD up to date on current legislative, legal, and other similar issues in Learning Disabilities. In her most recent report, Judy NCLB, issues regarding "highly qualified" teachers, and pending cases before the US Supreme Court.

As a member of the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities, DLD republished two important papers: "Transition to School and Work: A blueprint for your child's success after high school" and "The Documentation Disconnect for Students With Learning Disabilities: Improving Access to Postsecondary Disability Services." There a links to these two documents, available for free download, at TLD's home page.

Members will also soon have a new HotSheet available. This one provides a quick summary of effective and not-so-effective practices for teaching phonemic awareness. Watch for it!

On the public side, watch for a special series of entries in the Expert Connection section. More than half the respondents to a recent TLD poll told us that they did not know how to help college students receive accommodations. So, TLD asked Jennifer Lindstrom to explain the processes. TLD will be featuring Professor Lindstrom's explanations over the next few months.

If you're already a member of DLD and need your CEC member ID or password so that you can enter the members-only sections of TeachingLD, here's how to get help. Call CEC's Constituent Services Center toll free at (888) 232-7733 [TTY (703) 264-9446] and ask the operator to look up your membership number (which is the same as your user login).
